ULTRASUEDE: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

WHAT IS ULTRASUEDE?

Ultrasuede was first introduced in the late 1960s and quickly became one of the most well-known “artificial leathers,” often referred to as suede cloth. The fabric gained immediate popularity, appearing in both high-fashion apparel and upholstery applications.

Ultrasuede is a registered brand name of Springs Industries. Over time, the term has become widely used in a generic sense, with many imitation suede fabrics being labeled as Ultrasuede.

Ultrasuede and similar materials fall into a category of fabrics known as nonwoven fabrics. A non-woven fabric is composed of textile fibers that are laid out and then bonded together by processes such as needle punching, heat or adhesives.

The manufacturing of Ultrasuede is a patented process. It begins with a matrix of ultra-fine polyester and nylon fibers arranged in a web. These fibers are needle-punched to interlock them, then impregnated with polyurethane and cured. An acid process removes the nylon fibers, and the material is rinsed, dried, and brushed to create its signature suede-like texture. The final composition is polyester and polyurethane.

IMMITATION OR SUEDE?

Distinguishing between genuine suede leather and imitation materials like Ultrasuede can be challenging, but there are a few key differences:

  • Appearance — Imitation suede is typically more uniform, without natural blemishes
  • Backing — Ultrasuede is often lined or consistent on both sides
  • Leather characteristics — Genuine suede has only one finished side and a distinct natural smell

ULTRASUEDE MAINTENANCE TIP

Spills on Ultrasuede may leave behind a darker appearance once dry. In many cases, light brushing with a horsehair suede brush can restore the fabric’s appearance.

Always allow the fabric to dry completely before brushing.

DURABILITY

Ultrasuede is known for its durability and ability to maintain an elegant appearance over time when properly cared for. It is also colorfast, helping preserve its look for years.

CLEANABILITY

Ultrasuede can be cleaned using both wet and dry methods, though wet cleaning is typically more effective.

During cleaning, the fabric may temporarily stretch or relax. However, it will return to its original dimensions once fully dry.

While the fabric is still damp, gently brushing the nap in one direction can help remove marks. After drying, lightly brush again to restore the texture.

SPOT CLEANING

Ultrasuede is generally easy to spot clean, but certain stains—particularly ink—can be more difficult to remove.

Spot cleaning may cause lightening or discoloration if not handled carefully. Minimizing agitation and using proper techniques can help reduce this risk.

LONG-TERM CARE

With proper maintenance, Ultrasuede can last for years. Simple care practices include:

  • Regular vacuuming
  • Rotating and flipping cushions
  • Light damp dusting

Professional care can further extend the life of the fabric. The Fiber-Seal Fabric Care System helps reduce absorbency, resist staining, and maintain the fabric’s appearance over time— allowing you to enjoy your furnishings with greater peace of mind.

REMINDER: ALWAYS TEST CHEMICALS AND/OR PROCEDURES FIRST ON AN INCONSPICUOUS AREA OF THE FABRIC.
